Rehs also found that retailers were accepting the recent price increases. Price increases were a particularly relevant issue since the Diamond Trading Company announced a 3 percent price rise just prior to the show.

"Retailers are telling me that there is a real scarcity, they can't find things," Rehs said. "So they are willing to pay the higher price."

Avi Paz, the newly elected president of the Israel Diamond Exchange, noted that the increases could prove to be a problem for dealers who have committed to retail programs that involve delivering goods at specific prices.

Among diamond buyers, the consensus was the show was solid, though not as strong as last year.

In terms of style, Asschers were still hot, and princess cuts remained strong. Colored diamonds also did well. The three-stone trend still has some life, and some noticed that the right-hand ring may finally be living up to its potential, as retailers responded more favorably to the broader palette of designs.

She has things that were worn by her mother and grandmother, as well as shallow drawers of costume jewelry, including the bangle bracelet that was given to her grandmother in 1914, passed on to her mother in 1944, and then to her in 1967. Her custom wedding dress is there, with hats from years ago and yesterday. On shelving behind glass doors is her collection of compacts. In other boxes high on shelves are treasures only she knows are there--designer purses and shoes and hats. They're for when the need arises, not for display, she says. Mixed in with the expensive stuff are her Target and Dillard's specials. "I don't care where things came from, or their cost. I like the fun of mixing things up," she says, and is not afraid to wear an expensive suit with a purse from Target and $29 shoes.

…kids waited outside the Altman Building Thursday evening in the sweltering heat to get into Kai Kuhne's "Myself" show, Evan Yurman was seated backstage on a folding chair fiddling with his BlackBerry and minding a table set with sparkly David Yurman jewels. "There's probably about a few hundred thousand dollars' worth right here," Yurman said, gesturing to the table lined with gold necklaces, bracelets and chunky gold cocktail rings. But Yurman had some help, should anyone try anything suspicious. "I'm not the only one here. We've got an armed guard, too," he said, gesturing over his shoulder. Some featured pieces included necklaces from the David Yurman Renaissance collection, such as a 16-inch, 18-karat gold necklace that retails for $16,500.
